Thai food for any occasion

You know you fancy some Thai food for tonight. You just don’t know what kind of mood you will be in and with whom you want to enjoy a lovely meal. Here is shortlist of Thai restaurants, that covers any occasion.

Khorat Top Thai is an excellent choice for take away. You can choose from a large menu and their prices are not too expensive. So prepare for a warm night curled up in your bed with a bowl filled with a delicious red curry. Located near the Vondelpark at the 2e Constantijn Huygenstraat 64 (Oud-West – 683 12 97).

Right from work you might go to Thai Deum. Great food, lovely atmosphere and gentle service. Located in De Pijp, Ceintuurbaan 210 you’ll find a true Thai experience. It can be a little bit chaotic, but that definitely has its charm. A great place to release pressure after a day at the office.

Are you into a more serious dinner, you might want to go to Ko Chang. The tables are beautifully decorated with a flower and an elephant. This small place breathes Thai atmospere and serves good food. The service is outstanding. Located at the Westerstraat 91, 638 10 39

Do you want a fashionable and trendy ambiance, then go to to Kinnaree at the 1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat in the Jordaan. Look at the trendy cushions and their wall! It’s authentic Thai food in Modern interior. Excellent combination.

For special occasions only! White Elephant is a true delight. The most outstanding Thai food is served here, or maybe I’d better call it cuisine. The prices are accordingly, but it’s absolutely worth the investment. Their starter Miang Kham, wit piper sarmentosum, is magic! You’ll find this wonderful place at the Van Woustraat 3, 679 55 56.

Method acting

I used to think of the Leidseplein-area as the Sodom & Gomorra of Amsterdam. Only De Balie could gain my attention for lunch and working online outdoors (it is a pity they removed all wall sockets) and the Americain hotel for the Irish coffee. But recently this part of Amsterdam developed some beautiful pearls. MoMo at the Hobbemakade breathes a London atmosphere. Lovely to drink a glass of wine here (though a bit expensive). Stanislavski is the newest gain. Located in the Stadsschouwburg and decorated in nostalgic style this place captured my heart. Perfect to spend working hours here (they do have WiFi and wall sockets!) The food is delicious as well. The restaurant is named after theatre director Konstantin Stanislavski who developed method acting. This kind of theatre involves acting while the actors enter into a personage completely. Que? So!

One of my favourites tapas is queso frito. My sister and I always used to go to Pata Negra to enjoy the taste of this tapa. The restaurant was the only one – as far as we knew – that served the dish. Yesterday I discoverd a new place that offers this lovely delight. Tapasbar Castro. The restaurant is located in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid, Koninginneweg 212. The food is wonderful and the sangria heavenly. It is the first time I visited this place, although I walked passed it already many times. (The cobbler I go to is right across the street.) From now on you will certainly find me here more often.

If you would like to make queso frito yourself, here is the recipe.

Take 250 grams of soft cheese like Spanish Tetilla, Mahon or goat cheese and cut in the size of dices. Pollinate with flour, dip in a mix made of 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of water, then dip in bread crumps. Heat a layer of oil in a pan and bake the cheese quickly on all sides. This is definitly something you can wake me up for at night!

Quid facti?

Je gaat er zo aan voorbij, maar op de Marnixstraat zit een gezellig eetcafeetje, waar het eten het niveau van stadshap ontstijgt: Cafe De Koe. Zij nam de struisvogelbiefstuk met goddelijke gratin en ik pasta (zwart en wit) met coquilles. Heerlijk klaargemaakt!

Voor het diner deden we ABC’tje: Noem bij iedere letter het eerste woord dat in je opkomt. Opvallend hoe lijstjes van verschillende mensen eruit zien en iets zeggen over de persoon. Een aanrader voor een dagje teambuilding. Ik ga ‘m introduceren tijdens het eerstvolgende bedrijfsuitje. Hieronder lees je mijn ABC’tje van woensdag. Het idee is om het iedere drie maanden te herhalen, aldus zusje.

Cafe Kadijk** – Amsterdam

Gisteren mijn lijstje Indonesische restaurants uitgebreid. Cafe Kadijk op het Kadijksplein 5 (vlakbij Artis). Kleine kaart, en lekker eten! Klein restaurant, en een knusse eetcafe-uitstraling. De inrichting is heel gezellig en de bediening vriendelijk. Prima plek voor een leuke lunch en ook ‘s avonds is het prettig tafelen. Ze serveren spekkoek bij de koffie!!

Autumn lunch and dinner

It has been busy these last weeks. Dividing time between work, social activities, and walking around in cities during the lovely Indian summer days. That left me with only little time to write, not being able to finish some posts. At this moment I want to share with you some really nice places to eat. They are really worth visiting!

Coffee & Jazz, Amsterdam
I just recently discovered Coffee & Jazz, although they are already 21 years one of the most fantastic Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. The owner René is a pure and admirable person, totally crazy and making fun of his guests, but doing that with wit and honesty. The food, prepared by his Indonesian wife Peggy, is the BEST I ever had in an Indonesian restaurant. Just as good as my grandma used to cook. Go there!!

A lovely and cute place to have lunch or dinner. The food is wonderful as well as the environment. Their club sandwiches are my favourite.

De Zakkendrager, Utrecht
My old time favourite! Almost always when I go to Utrecht I will visit De Zakkendrager. Great for lunch, and even better for dinner. Their dishes are prepared with attention and the personnel is warm and friendly, just as the interior of the restaurant. From the closed veranda you have a wonderful view at an old tree. The wooden tables and the decorations make you feel at home right away.

Whisky

J: Dat heb je me helemaal niet verteld!
M: Oh, echt (…denkt…), jawel toch? Toen we de vorige keer…
J: (Schudt van nee)
M: Nou! Dan bij deze. Ik drink whisky.
J: Zonder iets erin?
M: Ja, helemaal zonder iets erin! 

J. leerde me wat high ball is! Whisky met Ginger ale. Heerlijk drankje, als je het mij vraagt. Maar voor een mixje neem je nog altijd een niet te dure whisky. Echte whisky drink je puur! Ook zo gek op whisky’s, ga dan zeker eens een keer naar L&B. Dat is het whiskycafe van Amsterdam. Volgens hun site hebben ze er meer dan 1080. En het is er ook nog eens heel gezellig.

A la Plancha – Amsterdam****

Tapas worden geserveerd aan de lange bar, waarachter een grote stier toekijkt hoe we onze goddelijke ensalada Rusa verorberen. Bij A la Plancha zit je niet intiem met je geliefde aan een tafeltje, maar intiem met alle andere restaurantbezoekers aan de gezellige bar. Je maakt een praatje links, en een praatje rechts en richt je dan weer tot elkaar. ‘Karnemelk,’ roept A., als hij een slok van de rode huiswijn neemt. Ik verslik me haast en proef de smaak van zuivel op mijn tong. We lachen.

Een meisje met vrolijk lang krulletjeshaar vertelt me wat in de vitrine ligt, maar zegt dat de gefrituurde sardientjes veel lekkerder zijn dan die in tomatensaus. Ze heeft ze zelf net ook besteld. A. en ik nemen het advies ter harte en worden beloond. Wat een heerlijkheid! Ook de aioli is ongekend. Het eten is voortreffelijk en heel erg Spaans.

De grootste verrassing komt als laatst. Het opzwepende gitaarspel van een van de obers beroert het hele restaurant. Aan de bar klapt iedereen mee en het ritme golft door mijn lichaam.

Huize Frankendael – Amsterdam****

Soms raak je sprakeloos van het onverwachte. Zoals ik gisterochtend. Huize Frankendael, laatste ‘zomers buiten’ in hartje Amsterdam. Aan de Middenweg (nr. 72) in Oost/Watergraafsmeer. Omgeven door overweldigende natuur. Het voormalige woonhuis heeft deze maand een publieke functie gekregen: podium, locatie en restaurant, mét ontbijtmogelijkheden! Als vroege natuurvogel ben ik heel blij met deze bijzondere aanwinst. Kunst, natuur, gastronomie: Wat een potentie! Bij mooi weer geniet je op het terras aan de prachtige tuin.

Roos

Een roos gekregen van de aardige bloemist op het Surinameplein (Amsterdam) terwijl ik op weg was naar de Roos.
